Reading Journals

Ok. I don’t know if this is mom brain or a side effect of 2019 information overload but I have the hardest time recalling what I have read. Tell me that I am not alone! It could be a book that I just couldn’t put down, loved to pieces and then when someone asks me what it’s about I am like … I liked it… I think.

And the funny thing is that last week while in line to check out books at the library the lady commented to the gentleman in from of me, “You know you checked this out last August. And this one too.” The guy just looked at her puzzled and said, “Oh.”

Abby and I read a lot so we recently started keeping book journals. These are just small books like these 5×7 sketchbooks (you can obviously use anything) where we keep track of what we read.

As we finish a book (audio and ebooks count too) we just take one page and write:

  • the title
  • the date
  • how many star we give it
  • everything else

In the everything else section we just write what is fresh in our head. This is a great place for takeaways from non-fiction (I’m looking at you GIRL, Wash Your Face) or just some comments that it was quick and easy, grab something from this author next time I head to the beach. I left that comment on When Life Gives You Lululemons! Even if I don’t love it I write that too. It makes it easy to go back and recall and reflect on what I have read! And I doodle a lot.

In Abby’s journal above you can see her comments on The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl which she loved. We recommended it on social media and I have had so many people message me and tell me how much their kids loved it too!

Why am I talking about this?

Well, I asked people over on Instagram if they would be interested in a monthly blog post where Abby and I share what we have been reading. Almost everyone said YES! So, look for that soon but until then I just wanted to share this little idea with you because without keeping a journal I wouldn’t even remember half of it.

Happy reading!
